Johns Hopkins University Research Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

We are looking for a full-time Research Assistant interested in collaborating on research in the Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). The position will be focused on a variety of research projects focused on substance use treatment policy and the criminal legal system. This position is supported by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. Examples of projects will include an evaluation of a state law in Maryland that requires jails to offer medications for opioid use disorder prior to release, a study of the implementation of mobile medication (methadone) units, and analyses of Medicaid, commercial claims data, and other administrative data systems. The effective candidate will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, a self-starter, and good at working both collaboratively and in teams. Background in these topics and interests in the health of marginalized and disadvantaged populations is a plus. The successful candidate will have prior work experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Position is offered as 100% remote, but hybrid (2-3 days on campus) is possible if the successful candidate prefers.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Run routine and ad hoc reports from research database. Perform data collection for study(ies) and develop data reports to share with PI. May use standard mathematical and statistical tools and computer programs to review data.

  • Conduct qualitative interviews, coding, and analysis with marginalized populations with trauma-informed interviewing techniques.

  • Duties may include data cleaning measures to ensure accuracy of data and preparation of tables.

  • May lead small study efforts and develop processes for ensuring data collection can occur in effective and efficient manner.

  • May interview and hire undergraduate assistants to work on projects and lead basic activities such as data collection and data entry.

  • May conduct literature searches to support faculty in research efforts. May design and format papers/publications. May assist PIs in writing summaries of papers for release as policy briefs.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Direct programming or research experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience.

  • Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of research experience or Master’s Degree in related discipline.

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $30.00 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)
