A Brief Overview

The Director of the Clinical Inpatient Access (CIA Director) is responsible for oversight of the Clinical Inpatient Access Department, which includes the Transfer Center RNs and Communication Specialists, Rooming Coordinators, the Life Flight departments. The Clinical Inpatient Access Director is responsible for oversight of performance improvement and fiscal management for the Clinical Inpatient Access Department. The Clinical Inpatient Access Director also directs any organizational change, program planning and involvement in Hospital wide initiatives to improve patient flow within Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC). The Clinical Inpatient Access Director also manages Transfer Center admissions into SHC-Tri-Valley and SHC and from outside institutions.

What you will do

  • Conducts data analysis in partnership with Planning and Finance to assess performance and help shape strategy for PCS.

  • Coordinates education initiatives for Clinical Inpatient Access staff to maintain performance of staff for all necessary tasks.

  • Drives a culture of proactive, integrated, high quality patient placement. Promotes integration of Transfer Center, Rooming, ANS, Life Flight in streamlined patient placement.

  • Engages Information Technology (IT) and other resources in enhancing operational capabilities.

  • Implements or modifies policies and procedures related to bed assignment and bed placement to increase satisfaction of SHC physicians, nursing, patients, and other hospital departments.

  • Leads projects with Quality Improvement and Patient Safety with the goal of understanding transfer center patient outcomes, supports service lines in establishing criteria for successful patient transfer, and provides feedback internally and externally when appropriate.

  • Manages hiring and evaluation process for Clinical Inpatient Access.

  • Manages the budget of the Clinical Inpatient Access Department-including goal and program planning, implementation, and evaluation, and maintaining operations within the designated department budget.

  • Manages the performance of the Clinical Inpatient Access department by utilizing metrics from Stat it, Tableau, and other performance measurement tools.

  • Oversee appropriate patient placement for all portals of entry in collaboration with Care Coordination.

  • Partners with Business Development, PCS and Strategic Service Line Directors in proactive outreach strategies.

  • Partners with Case Management with the goal of proactively looking at Patient Flow and appropriate Level of Care.

  • Partners with the Patient Care Managers in maintaining the quality of patient care and administrative direction of the patient care units by acting as a liaison between departments in support of patient access activities.

  • Participates in hospital committees and task forces as assigned by the Executive Director and VP.

  • Plans, directs and coordinates projects for Patient Care Services (PCS) and the Clinical Inpatient Access Department.

  • Reports on the performance of the Clinical Inpatient Access departments during the weekly team care metric review meetings.

  • Responsible for ensuring necessary Level of Care is compatible with bed availability and Nursing Level of Care criteria.

  • Serves as a resource to hospital leadership for all activities and initiatives related to bed assignment and bed placement.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university

Experience Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of hospital computer systems such as EPIC for electronic patient recordkeeping and Bed Board for scheduling rooms

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of budgeting and fiscal management

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management Physical Requirements

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS - Basic Life Support and

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $94.28 - $124.90 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
