This position works out of our Columbus, OH location in the Abbott Nutrition division. What the Principal Engineer will do:

An engineering professional who, working with little or no supervision, applies advanced scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to complete complex assignments related to a specific technical field or discipline. A Principal Engineer has full knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own.

What you'll work on:

  • Voice of Site: Provides voice of customer for Site Engineering & Maintenance and engages within the site and across sites to ensure robust technical feedback to the project teams.

  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

  • Understands the business needs of the company, and has a thorough knowledge of the customer and clinical needs when driving development and ongoing updates for detailed scope, schedule, and budget for site-specific workstreams. Manages all workstreams in purview.

  • Develops strategy and gains alignment on project resource structure and requirements, advocates for the needs of the site.

  • Drives robust development and buy-in for learning curve, IME, line Head Count analyses in support of the RCE.

  • Leads development of the training plan. Leads the site and division teams through the learning curve and seeks to achieve overall business goals and objectives within stated line performance domains.

  • Incorporates business foresight of emerging technological trends. Works with marketing, product development, and manufacturing to establish scope, priorities, and schedules of project, e.g. examines the entire project planning process for a new product or complex project.

  • Independently performs economic analysis and feasibility studies related to complex and often multiple competing project alternatives.

  • Responsible for achieving the project's financial targets in support of business objectives.

TECHNICAL/DESIGN:

  • Benchmarks internally and externally. Analyzes business forces (customers, suppliers, competitors, technologies, government regulations) in major markets to identify trends and recommend responses, e.g. recommends a division-wide development program to introduce new technology.

  • Independently executes, and/or directs others in the execution of: the design of product/processes/ equipment/systems/facilities by applying novel engineering theories, concepts, and techniques within the disciplines.

  • Designs and leads complex experiments, often with multiple variables, gathers data, and performs detailed analysis. Assesses relevance. Communicates across functions and disciplines.

PROBLEM SOLVING/INNOVATION:

  • Conceptualizes complete solutions. Creates or coordinates the design solutions for novel or complex problems; integrates regulatory and operational needs; assesses cost benefit, e.g. identifies processes and develops flow charts for a complex construction or manufacturing operation. Explores multiple alternatives. Structures studies and integrate cross-disciplinary and cross-functional issues to arrive at optimal course of action, e.g. investigates process to meet increasing regulatory requirements while maintaining manufacturing/construction efficiency. Applies technology in innovative ways. Combines technologies to anticipate or address customer needs; shares solutions across sites; employs proven solutions to increase effectiveness of engineering methodology or manufacturing process, e.g. incorporates process commonalities to reduce cycle time; attempts to leverage core technical competencies to its limit.

ORGANIZATIONAL INTERFACE:

  • Mentors others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance. Where appropriate, provides tasks/project assignment opportunities for employee development and evaluates performance.

  • Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with both senior management and external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Prepares written communication.

  • Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents, e.g. develops proposals, project summaries, and design documentation; submits articles for internal or external publication. May move forward with action plans without seeking approval.

  • Exhibits advanced ability to apply concepts of careful communication.

  • Balances bottom line objectives of a project with long-term interest of customer, e.g. makes trade-offs to further the relationship; incorporates long-term customer benefits into project.

COMPLIANCE:

  • Complies with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable.

  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major projects within function through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.

  • Has full awareness of the potential consequences (defects and failure modes) of design changes to established processes. Mitigates risk within function through sound design, early risk assessments and implementation of fallback strategies.

PROJECT FOCUSES RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Technical : Represents the site as a technical SME. This role is the technical conduit between site engineering and division engineering. This role will be the primary lead on the ground to support the engineering qualification work. They are focused on design and shall seek to become the site’s primary engineering SME on the HMF equipment (filler and secondary packaging) as well as the processing systems to be installed. They will either lead or assist those that lead all HMF engineering studies or other technical data gathering efforts. Develops procedures, PMs, safety protocols/procedures, spares strategy and execution. Supports development of the training plan. Leads operations procedures, safety procedures, preventative maintenance plans and execution, maintenance plans, spares strategy, spares evaluation, and spares acquisition for the site.

  • Risk Management: Supports robust risk management plan for site and rolls up to program risk mgmt. Provides technical expertise to drive completion of site incident management tools such as FMEAs, RCAs, and other root cause techniques.

  • Safety : Key driver for creating and executing the detailed safety plan and drives operations focused safety initiatives for areas in project scope. Drives safety-focused culture. Interacts with Safety professionals at Site and Division on a regular basis.

  • Validation : In partnership with Division Engineering, support all aspects of Qualification/Validation for the line, associated equipment/processes, and all products in scope. Support the IQ and OQ work (Div Eng leads) for execution of all documentation and runs. Leads all technical aspects of the PQ/PV and CIP work (Div Eng supports) including development and execution of all documentation and runs.

  • Leadership : Endeavors to be in lock-step with the other areas of the program; a proactive leader who removes obstacles while always keeping quality top of mind. Builds excitement and addresses detractors professionally. Does not accept status quo but drives the technical aspects forward benchmarking to other sites and state of the art where appropriate; embraces innovation and new ideas.

  • Project Success: This role will seek to build knowledge as the site engineering SME to provide technical guidance for the execution of the learning curve. Supports development of a holistic plan including early/extended team member involvement to ensure overall program success.

  • Experience : LSS desirable. Willingness to learn LSS methodologies is required.

Required Education and Experience You'll Bring:

Bachelors Degree in Engineering, science, or closely related discipline is desired plus equivalent work experience

  • Masters Degree Preferred

  • Willingness to learn LSS methodologies is required.

  • LSS desirable.

Minimum 8 years significant engineering and/or operational experience.

  • Has a career history marked by a consistent series of technical contributions and accomplishments. Significant contribution to product or process development or improvement through creative application of technical effort will equally be recognized.

  • Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors.

  • Exercises judgment and advises management as to the appropriate actions.

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Listens to and understands others' points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one's own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.

  • Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment.

  • Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.

  • Has a technical background in health care, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical, or similar industries (preferred).

  • Has demonstrated competency with financial systems and in fiscal control.

The base pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $190,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
