Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

The RN/Lactation educator staff nurse provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies and procedures of Las Palmas Medical Center and the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. In collaboration with the patient, the patient’s family and other members of the health care team, the clinical RN assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, delegates and coordinates treatment plans for outpatient and inpatient lactation instruction and support services.

The RN/Lactation Educator facilitates current, consistent and precise instructions for all lactating mothers in the Maternal Child areas which include: Labor and Delivery, Post Partum, Antepartum, Transition, and Special Care Nursery. The educator functions in coordination with the hospital policies and procedures to constantly provide improvement in the area of lactation coordination using the cost/quality models. Functions include assisting with managing the Maternal Child Area’s breastfeeding program, utilizing support education and intervention in the inpatient setting as well as throughout the continuum of care.

This process begins with maternal education in prenatal classes and continues with post discharge follow up by the educator. In addition, the lactation educator is available and responsible for phone counseling, product sales control and rental with facilitation of breastfeeding education to the mother. The lactation educator provides consistency utilizing educational opportunities for all healthcare staff members, while promoting excellence in patient/maternal care. The Lactation Educator recognizes and seizes all opportunities for outreach community services. He/she facilitates education within all healthcare disciplines to promote optimal lactation care outcomes and community services.

What you will do in this role:

  • Participates in the development, coordination, managing, facilitating, conducting, and evaluating of onboarding and orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel

  • Conducts orientation in a manner that facilitates a positive learning environment. Incorporates organizational values/culture into the orientation process

  • Identifies learning needs of staff and assesses practice gaps, comparing competencies to actual practice. Plans educational content with learner engagement

  • Partners with the Clinical Education Market Director to review outcomes data to evaluate and refine aptitude management activities

  • Demonstrates an expertise of adult educational theory and the ability to apply evaluation methodologies, (i.e., Kirkpatrick) into courses and curriculum to refine clinical programs

What qualifications you will need:

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Texas or Compact State Nursing License – RN required

  • BCLS Certification

  • NRP Certification (Chapters 1-9) within 3 months of hire or immediately with Newborn, Labor and Delivery/Antepartum experience

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate from an Accredited Associate Degree or Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing Program

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work within a team to ensure quality care

  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills

  • Strong critical thinking and communication skills and ability to prioritize needs continuously.

  • Ability to lead a team and function as a team member.

  • Excellent customer service skills, follow AIDET philosophy.

  • Computer literate in charting and order entry.

  • Must demonstrate a broad knowledge of all aspects of breastfeeding including the psychosocial.

  • Will have experience in maternal/child nursing, early childhood development, prenatal education, breastfeeding support, and nutrition.

  • Should have experience teaching staff through educational inservices or seminars. Previous teaching experience preferred.

  • Must possess a strong foundation in relation to nutritional support of the preterm infant.

  • 20 hours or Breastfeeding Education, 5 hours will be under direct observation of the experienced Lactation Consultant within 6 months of hire. Annual competency check-off to follow after 20 education hours are completed.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Preferred health care experience

  • Preferred Neonatal experience

  • S.T.A.B.L.E. course certification

  • Preferred Certified Breastfeeding Educator certification

  • IBCLC certification within two years of employment or transfer to the unit.
