Job Description:

The Director will provide professional expertise and leadership for the Office of Academic Support and Career Counseling in the John Sealy School of Medicine. The incumbent will serve as learning skills specialist by providing evaluations of medical students who experience academic difficulty or may have learning disabilities, and will provide career counseling.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Identifies and tracks the academic progress of all John Sealy School of Medicine students

  • Develops criteria for identifying students at-risk for academic difficulty

  • Meets with at-risk students and those with demonstrated academic difficulty to assess and coordinate assistance based on their needs

  • Refers students with more complex or multi-factorial problems to University resources when appropriate, including medical and mental health counseling

  • Oversees the John Sealy School of Medicine program for tutoring and medical licensing examination preparation

  • Identifies and tracks the career development plans of all John Sealy School of Medicine students

  • Develops criteria for identifying students who are at-risk for failing to achieve their career plans

  • Meets with at-risk students to assess and advise them on career planning techniques and contingency plans based on their needs

  • Conducts periodic career planning workshops

  • Advises Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions on all matters related to student academic and career counseling

  • Manages senior learning specialists in the Office of Academic Support and Career Counseling

  • Provides leadership and vision for the direction of the Office of Academic Support and Career Counseling

  • Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure

  • Performs related duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Expertise in student academic performance assessment and career choice decisions in the health professions

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders

  • Excellent skills in organization and prioritization

  • Ability to identify and balance a range of student needs and priorities

  • Ability to provide management of other professional employees

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Education, Educational Psychology, Medicine, or a related field

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in academic and/or career counseling

Preferred Work Experience:

  • Related experience in a medical school or health science setting
