POSITION DETAILS

Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is a vibrant teaching and learning community committed to advancing the intellectual and personal growth of students. CUNY 2x Tech was a Mayoral initiative to double the number of tech bachelors awarded by public colleges. In 2023, the city expanded CUNY 2x Tech to five new campuses, including BMCC. It entails a comprehensive investment in the instruction, advising, and experience that are essential to prepare New Yorkers for 21stcentury tech jobs in NYC. All CUNY 2x Tech faculty and staff members will play a critical role in ensuring that the college’s tech education is aligned with industry demand. The role will involve significant work directly with NYC-based industry partners and the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline to create career pathways and expand employment opportunities for students in New York’s emerging industries, review curricula, provide feedback on students’ job-readiness, teach in the classroom, and ensure that overall tech education provided by the college is preparing students with the academic and career readiness skills they need to succeed.

Computer Information Systems. NYC leads the nation in terms of the number of technology jobs posted and expects long-term double-digit job growth in the field. Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC)’s Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS) offers majors in CIS, Computer Network Technology (CNT), Computer Science (CSC), Geographic Information Science (GISc), and Cybersecurity Certificate that prepare students for employment as web developers, web programmers, database administrators, GIS technicians, GIS programmers, help desk support staff, network and computer system administrators, cybersecurity analyst, software developers and software quality assurance analysts, and testers.

The Internship Specialist will report to the Chairperson of the Computer Information Systems Department (CIS) at BMCC. In addition to the CUNY title overview duties, tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Provide support to accomplish CUNY 2x Tech goals and objectives and support for students' specialized needs in the CIS Department.

  • Collaborate effectively with staff and faculty to realize academic support for students in the CIS Department.

  • Engage with employers in defining workforce needs, identifying hiring challenges and opportunities.

  • Specify skills and proficiencies needed to fill available roles and explore partnerships to help grow New York’s emerging industries.

  • Secure partnerships with employers offering paid internships, apprenticeships, and full-time job opportunities to students with target majors.

  • Continuously cultivate and grow employer relationships.

  • Share employment opportunities and, where appropriate, refer qualified students to employers for specific roles.

  • Secure paid internships and full-time job offers for our newest graduates within target majors.

  • Share knowledge with faculty, advisors, and the broader campus to encourage alignment with in demand skills.

  • Report the employment opportunities to the Program Manager to build up a cohort of graduating students to offer career advisement, prepare students for interviews, and help them achieve their career goals.

  • Collect and Analyze program data and develop measurement criteria in partnership with others to enhance student learning outcomes and success in each of the key CUNY 2x Tech dimensions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT-related areas and at least four years of related experience strongly preferred.

  • At least 3 years of experience with program or project management.

  • Previous familiarity with academic environments, particularly in STEM fields.

  • Previous professional experience in a tech field, preferably within or adjacent to NYC tech companies.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience or ability to quickly learn appropriate modules in the CUNYfirst system.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • An understanding of the tech industry and its relationship to higher education.

  • Experience with data and reporting (both quantitative and qualitative written reports).

  • Experience in career services or economic or workforce development.

  • Experience with community and business outreach, ideally in implementing talent acquisition, outreach strategies, and business development.

  • Experience working with non-profit community-based organizations is preferred.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Supports an academic internship program providing career development and professional work experience.

  • Acts as liaison between the College and employer sponsors, monitoring the success of students' internship experiences

  • Supervises student internships, assuring adherence to related College and governmental policies and regulations

  • Creates and conducts orientation sessions and workshops for students in the internship program; coordinates applications, interviews, and placement as part of overall student outreach

  • Provides faculty orientation and development related to internship programs

  • Implements and evaluates competencies and other success factors

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$75,465 - $79,188

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
