In this exciting role your primary objective will be to develop and implement environmental programs and systems required to comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, company policies, strategies, initiatives and goals.

The Principal Environmental Specialist position is part of the diverse North Haven EHS Team that ensures our employees have a safe work environment, our manufacturing processes and products minimize environment impacts, and compliance with regulatory and company requirements is maintained.

This position reports to the Senior EHS Manager for Medtronic’s North Haven campus. The North Haven campus has approximately 2,800 employees and includes a diverse work force focused on Manufacturing Excellence, Research & Development, Surgical Robotics and Administrative functions.

A Day in the Life

The Principal Environmental Specialist will develop, administer, and implement Medtronic North Haven’s environmental programs in accordance with government and company requirements.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage compliance to environmental regulatory programs including wastewater, stormwater, air emissions, oil spill prevention (SPCC), spill prevention and control (SPCP), solvent management (SMP), underground storage tanks, EPCRA reporting, and ozone depleting substances (greenhouse gas and refrigerant management).

  • Provide/promote employee awareness on environmental regulatory and company requirements including preparing and presenting training materials, EHS Tips and Alerts.

  • Maintain all documentation required by regulatory / company requirements including preparing and submitting regulatory required reports (examples include annual air emissions summary and compliance certification, EPCRA 312 and 313, quarterly and semi-annual ethylene oxide sterilization CEMs reporting, stack tests, DMRs and SMRs) and completing/overseeing the necessary inspections and/or sampling.

  • Evaluate new construction projects, new processes, and process changes to determine the regulatory impact including the need for permit changes. Communicate and develop the process for implementing applicable regulations / company requirements.

  • Work with a cross-functional teams to eliminate and/or identify substitutions for chemicals that contain Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS).

  • Co-lead the implementation of the site’s EHS Management System.

  • Review and analyze proposed and promulgated regulations; determine and effectively communicate impact to site leadership. Work with site management to ensure compliance to requirements, resolve compliance issues and set strategy.

  • Work with cross functional team to investigate environmental incidents and ensure root cause is identified and corrective / preventative actions are implemented.

  • Monitor pollution prevention activities, supports efforts to reduce environmental impact from waste generation, energy usage and water usage. Prepare and submit company required reporting including the usage of chemicals with global warming potential.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Masters degree in Environmental Engineering or similar subject matter

  • Experience with Wastewater, Stormwater and Air Permitting, including sampling

  • Experience reviewing and interpreting regulations

  • Experience complying with a NESHAP

  • Experience preparing and submitting environmental regulatory reports (examples include EPCRA reporting, Annual Air Emissions Summary, DMRs, SMRs)

  • Experience working with Governmental Agencies

  • Experience complying with regulatory requirements for Ethylene Oxide Sterilization

The provided base salary range is used nationally in the United States (except in Puerto Rico and certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
