UPMC Neonatal Developmental Care Director, Newborn Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh are recruiting for a Director of Neonatal Developmental Care at UPMC Children’s Hospital in the Division of Newborn Medicine. The Newborn Division has thirty neonatal faculty and a twelve fellow Neonatal-Perinatal medicine fellowship training program. The core NICUs at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital include a 55-bed level four unit and a 77-bed level three unit with 11,000 deliveries. In addition to these two sites, we manage five community NICUs with a total of 44 beds and 7,300 deliveries.

The Director of Neonatal Developmental Care will provide programmatic leadership in developmental intervention to high-risk infants in Level III /IV UPMC NICUs. This will involve the assessment of the developmental needs of neonates and their families and assist in planning, development, coordination, teaching and evaluation family-centered developmentally supportive care strategies. This individual will be responsible for the development and implementation of education to ensure staff knowledge on advanced developmental care.

Job Description:

Faculty responsibilities include patient care, house staff and student education and academic pursuits. Division faculty at UPMC Children’s Hospital teach pediatric hospital medicine fellows, pediatric residents from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and visiting residents from area programs. This position will provide direct care, amount determined by the Chief of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, at UPMC community pediatric units as part of the clinical responsibilities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Assesses developmental needs of neonates and their families and assists in planning, development, coordination, teaching and evaluation of developmentally supportive care strategies

  2. Coordinates an appropriate physical environment in for infant and family to ensure a developmentally appropriate environment for high-risk infants to include promoting and nurturing parent/infant bonding

  3. Creates best practice, data-driven education which guides the growth, professional practice, and competence of the healthcare team members

  4. Partners with clinical specialists and Clinical Educators to facilitate learning-based education design and implementation to close knowledge gaps. Implements evaluation methods to measure and report outcomes.

  5. Coordinates in the developmental framework of the care delivered by the multidisciplinary team

  6. Maintains complete and timely documentation of all assessments, evaluations, interventions, and communications in the medical record while maintaining privacy

  7. Participates and assists with the coordination of Fetal Care consults and coordinates referrals to appropriate follow-up programs (i.e. Neonatal Follow Up Clinic)

  • Candidate must have completed a Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship program and be Board Certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine

  • Minimum of 3 years NICU developmental experience post-fellowship

  • Must be qualified for a medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
