POSITION DESCRIPTION

CLASS TITLE: Sanitation Worker I GR: 102 FLSA: Non-Exempt DATE: 04/30/2024

DEPARTMENT: Public Works DIVISION: General Services/Sanitation

REPORTS TO: Sanitation Supervisor or Driver APPROVED: JOB CODE: 7038

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under close supervision; performs manual labor in the collection of solid waste. Follows instructions;

procedures are well defined; may make suggestions for work improvement.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

o Loads sanitation and/or recycling trucks.

o Dumps refuse, recycling carts and containers; removes debris and trash from alleys and streets.

o Unloads recyclables from vehicles.

o Maintains landfill sites.

o Services trucks and equipment as required; repairs refuse carts.

o Prepares minimal records of own activities.

o Performs overtime as required and performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:

None.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:

o High school diploma or equivalent.

o Some experience in manual labor work.

o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:

None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds force

frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Climbing/Balancing: Climb inclines, uneven surfaces, balance required.

Walking/Running: Very extensive walking, frequent running at moderate pace required.

Stooping/Bending: Continuous.

Stand/Sit: Sit about 5 percent of the time.

Reaching: Frequent, overhead as well as horizontal.

Vision: Adequate to perform essential job functions.

Color Vision: Adequate to perform essential job functions.

Hearing: Seldom perceive nature of sounds by ear.

Speech: Seldom express ideas by means of spoken words.

Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Minimal, able to walk, push carts and work levers.

Manual Dexterity: Minimal, able to use shovels, rakes, brooms, clutch and levers.

Ability to listen and apply information and instructions.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:

Sanitation packer truck, lifts, shovels, rakes, brooms and power washer.
