Stony Brook University Facility Operations Assistant 1 in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service standards and specifications. There are no education or experience requirements for this class. Applicants must be physically able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor. Must have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Brief Description of Duties: The Facility Operations Assistant 1 will perform a variety of relatively unskilled maintenance, repair and related activities assisting skilled and semi-skilled trades positions in building and structural maintenance, plumbing and electrical repairs. The Facility Operations Assistant 1 will accomplish tasks and other assigned duties in a timely and effective manner; adheres to all departmental policies and procedures; and may be asked to respond to emergencies.

  • Perform moderate to heavy manual labor to include a variety of relatively unskilled maintenance and repair to include loading/unloading, moving and holding materials and tools.
  • Assist skilled and semi-skilled trades staff in building and structural maintenance, plumbing and electrical repairs to include climbing ladders and working at heights on scaffolds and platforms.
  • Clean shop and clean up work areas after work is performed.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.

Seniority for promotion is the length of service in the Operational Services Bargaining Unit. Seniority applies to vacant non-competitive class positions in salary grades higher than the applicants grade. Applicants must meet the posted qualifications/job requirements, legitimate operating needs of the department and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.

At time of submission, candidates must include all relevant work experience and training/education information. Submissions failing to do so, will not be considered.

Upon conditional offer, the State Classified Appointments Unit will ask for proof of relevant experience or training/education.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
