This is a temporary position for a period of one year to cover a leave.

Your role

As part of the Strategy, Public Affairs and Government Relations team, you will support the Director, Media Relations and Issues Management / Corporate Spokesperson in dealing with media requests in a way that enhances the Corporation’s reputation and increases Canadians’ understanding of the value of public broadcasting and CBC/Radio-Canada’s priorities.

Your work will include drafting corporate key messages and other media relations materials, including news releases, briefing notes, Q&A documents, and communications plans; providing media relations support, including media training to senior officials and designated spokespeople; managing relationships with external suppliers, such as media monitoring companies; ensuring the quality and accuracy of translated documents; and collaborating closely with the Corporate Communications team on social media monitoring.

You will also substitute as Corporate Spokesperson when required (i.e. directly responding to media inquiries).

Key Tasks:

  • Help identify past, emerging, current and future issues that may affect the brand and reputation of the Corporation.

  • Help develop key messages, questions and answers.

  • Collaborate with other business units on media relations and issues management, as needed (e.g. strategic advice, fact checking, messaging).

  • Help review documents prior to publication from an issues management perspective.

  • Accompany, when required, senior executives to events, speaking opportunities, panels, conferences, etc. to facilitate their dealings with the media.

  • Assist in determining appropriate responses to media requests and/or published articles.

  • Contribute to the development of media relations materials (news releases, backgrounders, “Get the Facts” statements).

  • Recommend proactive media relations opportunities to raise the profile of the President & CEO and corporate CBC/Radio-Canada initiatives.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, journalism, or equivalent.

  • Minimum 3 years of journalism, public relations, or media relations experience.

  • Bilingualism required.

  • Strong writing skills required, preferably in both English and French.

  • Requires diplomacy in coordinating and developing responses in a way that supports CBC/Radio-Canada’s reputation.

  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills when dealing with multiple stakeholders within the organization.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to respond to many urgent deadlines within a short space of time.

  • Exercise judgment quickly and effectively under stressful situations.
